Our comrade Michel Mill died of a heart attack on October 6 this year. Michel was extremely active since the inception of Alternatives of which he was a member of the executive committee. He had been involved in the international solidarity movement since 1960s and also played a very important role in the trade union movement, especially in the 1970s when he became an important player in the strike of May 1972. A recent film on the trade union actions of 1970s made by Magnus Issacson has been dedicated to Michel Mill.
Alternatives organized a meeting in the memory of Michel on November 9 in which many of his comrades talked about his contributions and role in the progressive movements in Canada and Quebec.
His memory will remain alive with us. CERAS extends its heartfelt condolence to his family and friends.
Media & South Asia
On November 14, 1996 CERAS organized a seminar "Unveiling South Asia" with three guest speakers on the panel, Kalpana Sharma, assistant editor of The Hindu (a leading English daily in India), Jooneed Khan, senior foreign editor of La Presse and Rana Bose, editor of Montreal Serai.
Kalpana Sharma said that classical media training stipulates reporting events and not the process which culminates in events. She illustrated her comments by several examples. For example, people make news only when they die in big numbers as in Bhopal. Events like demonstration against sati will be reported as an event and the issues of women's health and poverty are not given any space. She highlighted the growing negative role of the newspaper owners by intervening in the editorial decisions. She said that in India, the properitors are becoming the managing editors thus interfereing on a day to day basis.
Jooneed Khan complimented Kalpana's presentation and stressed the need of alternate media like the internet, bulletins of community organizations, film festivals, etc. He expressed a lot of concern on the monopolization of the media all over the world. Rana Bose spoke about his experience in producing Montreal Serai, a magazine for the South Asian community in Canada.
Annual General Meeting of CERAS was held on September 29. The Elected members of the Board, in their meeting of December 8, 1996, elected a new Executive Committee.
